so i have this 5.0 motor sittin in my garage. the motor has over 100k on it. what do i need to get done to it to be in good running condition? at a minimum i would like the block cleaned and checked since it did have head gasket problems. i dont have much money to put into it so im not looking for a total rebuild just want it to run good.

motor

tear it apart and re-ring and bearing it depends on what it looks like. might have to go 30 over then new pistons, rings , and bearings, not a big deal look on ebay can find some good deals on stock 302 parts.

yeah im not looking to really rebuild it or have it rebuilt. not gonna be a huge power motor just looking for back to stop. i can get a rebuild motor for around $600 so if im spending anywhere near that forget it. does it need to be bored over to re-ring it? i can get a re-ring kit for like $170.

You're going to need to go through it if it had a bad head gasket. Chances are the coolant mixed into the oil at some point contaminating the bearing surfaces.

Depending on your budget and goals i'd look for another shortblock to start over with.

That sounds like the best plan for your limited budget. It would totally suck if you spent money on a block with contaminated bearing surfaces. 302 blocks are pretty easy to find the only problem is you'd have to have them magnafluxed to make sure they are useable. It is not an easy decision.

so i cant just replace the bearings and rering it? it still ran before we pulled it, only had slight head gasket problem.
