I have one out of a f150 2500 miles on fresh rebuild. You would have to swap your tail shaft housing onto it. I believe it should work tho. Check into it if you are interested to make sure. $500

Why not fix yours. They all have the same common problems/failures. Loss of 4th gear (fixable in the vehicle). Loss of forward clutch (cracked fwd drum). Loss of reverse (poor quality oe reverse band). Planetary failure (common on vehicles with over 100+k-heat treat on sun gear improper) Tcc failure/codes-(worn out valvebody).
Depending on the date of production, the 03 is a crossover year for the transmission some of the 03 models have a input sensor and a non ferrous sun gear shell and is not interchangeable with earlier 4r70w's.
Car-Part.com list 16 different versions for a 2003 crown Vic.
Be careful with trying to interchange the models. If you do, match the tag.

Whats the cost to rebuild one vs buying a used one for 300-500?

about $1000....Was going to have mine rebuilt for my Grand Marquis but it was cheaper to buy a 50000 mile used one....Cheaper by about 1200

The cost of rebuilding one depends on the actual parts replaced. Average for a "bench" rebuild is 1000-1200. However, it may be possible to just "repair" the unit for a little as 3-400 bucks....again, depending on what wrong with it and how bad its damaged. Just about everything your going to find out of a 2003 is going to have 100+K on it.
