im putting a 6 liter in my s10 and i want overdrive so im looking for a 4l80 or 4l80e.if anyone has experience with these trans please chime in was the 4l80 a non computer controlled trans and the 4l80e was computer controlled? if so would it be easier to run the non computer controlled trans. and are either of these going to be able to handle 500 hp going through them?. heres my number if anyone has one or wants to give me some info thanks 586-209-6676

All were computer controlled. I have one in my truck with the transgo full manual kit. Eliminated the need for a computer to control it. I put it in about 10 years ago when the electronics to run them were big money and i wanted a bullet proof overdrive. MSD makes a more affordable controller for it now. If i were to do it over again i'd go that route.

what about a 4l70e out of a trailblazer ss i have a guy with one that might want to trade some stuff. idk if it will hold 500 hp im thinking it will be ok since my s10 only weight 2800-3000 lbs and a trailblazer weighs like double.

Buy the 6.0 and 4l80e out of a pick up truck with the harness & computer.
Minimal changes to the 4l80e and a performance converter will get you where you need to be.
Keep in mind, if your buying a combination that has 150k on it, the trans will need to be gone through anyways.

What's a 4l80e normally cost to freshen up? Ballpark

i have the motor already and im having a harness made. im getting this 4l70e trans i found a rebuild kit for 400 bucks that includes a beast sun shell and alto red clutches and everything you need to make the trans hold power and i can do it myself. from what iv read the 4l70e trans is easier to fit in a s10 then a 4l80e so im running with it. i know this thing has to be able to handle power with the rebuild.

I put about 500 through my 60E behind mybheads and cam 6.0. I had over 70 1/4-mile passes all in the low 12s and high 11s at 4000-4100#. I recently put that trans into my stock wagon and it's going strong.

Rich. Have you used the smart tech input housing yet?

I'm a dealer for Sonnax products, so Ive used them since they came out, and use one in builds about every other week. I usually get a peek at products before they are released. The early ones did not come with a input shaft, so I was forced to buy them elsewhere and press them into the Smart Tech housings. Now they sell them with a upgraded input (I might add for less money than I paid for some input shafts). They also now make a billet overun piston, which allows you to use the factory steel molded pistons for fwd and 3-4.... somewhat confusing, but all in all constant improvements & upgrades. What has been released in the last month are output shafts.
