351w roller build

I am putting together a 351w hydraulic roller engine and have run into a few problems. The spider holder thing seems loose, is it normal for the lifters to have to click into the holders every time? It just seems like they dont hold them straight very well. Also I do not have the right pushrods, I have a set for a flat hydaulic cam, and they are way to long. Does anyone one know the right length for a 351w hyd roller? It is a roller block and I am currently using stock style roller lifters with a motorsport spider holder. The cam is a normal center, not one for a roller conversion. Thanks, Bill

Are you sure it's a roller block? What is the casting number? I've never had that issue with a roller block, that stuff should all work fine.

It has the taller lifter bores, and even had the holes tapped for the spider tray. Its a 385 hp 351w crate motor from ford motorsport from the late 90s.

I found a set of pushrods from motorsport for the 351w with hyd rollers, now my biggest issue is how sloppy the H bars are on the lifters. I'll try to get some pics on here.

you can see in the pics how the lifter still sits below the H bar when the lifter is all of the way down. Is that normal???

Dude, you have the H-bars stuffed in that spider? The H-Bars are supposed to sit UNDER the spider. The spider is just a spring that holds them down, it they just sit under it, right on the machined surface of the block. Install it that way and you'll probably be all set.

Hey, the 'H's go UNDER the spider.

it looks like you opened up the spider's legs and slid the H into them.

Put the lifters in, put the H's on so the sit flush with the top of the lifter bore, then put the spider on top and tighten the screws down so that the spider puts pressure down on the H's.

It's supposed to be a spring type deal, the spider it is...

Hope this helps.

yeah that would have sucked if he started that motor up.

Wow. yeah I see how that works now, I've always seen the tie bar type lifters, and never looked at a spider hold down installed before. I knew something wasnt right, but those H bars popped right into the spider without bending it so i thought thats how it worked lol. I put the H bars in so the UP side was facing up, the same side with the little bump on it. Thanks for the help guys!

Once you flip the dog bones over, make sure they are all orientated the same way..(You have one that is not facing the same direction as the rest, but it's currently the only one that is correct).

THE dog bones are NOT up side down in the pictures! The angle/bevel has to face the lifter shoulder. or they will bind when one valve is in action an the other not. It just looks funky becuase the tray is holding them up a lil and not pushing them down.

MAke sure they are all the same orientation with th eangled cut down adn the dot up .. I just noticed you have most that one but one in the picture is not.

Yeah we flipped the front one before taking picture for some reason...:icon_conf I was hoping no one would notice that lol.
