302 Startup & Break In

Well i got everything ready for start up, double check everything. When i went to to break the motor in at 1800 rpm for 15 min evrything was ok tell 4 min into running time. One side of Headers on driver side, the two inner header pipes turned bright Red. So then we shut car off.

Can anyone help with this issue.

Thanks

on break-in it can be normal but it may also be late timing or lean condition.

late timing can cause a late combustion causing to to still burn in the header and lean conditions typically lead to hotter conditions

Can to much fuel pressure cause this also. I am running with a Holly Blue Fuel pump. The gage was showing 13-14 pounds of pressure.

Thanks, Now i need to sell my Holly Blue & get a Holly Red. And now my headers look like crap.

Thanks.

One regulater came with it. And was only showing 14 pounds. I had bought another one and same thing. I was told that u only need 6 or 7 pounds of fuel pressure. So i just bought a new Holly Red is morning.

You need to slow down, buying that Holley red was a waste of money. You have to adjust the fuel pressure at the reg using the allen screw on the top of the reg.

And if your using a Tappet cam(I assume because you have to preset the idle for a amount of time) You want the rpms around 2500 or so and every few seconds hit the gas (around 3500 rpms) and let it settle back down to 2500. That way the oil gets slinged around and none of the lobes get starved of oil.

BUT DO NOT ANY OF THIS UNTIL YOU FIX THE FUEL PRESSURE! YOU WILL WASH DOWN THE CAM AND RUIN IT.

We have tryed to adjust the regulater with the holly blue and we get to 10. We also used two different regulaters and the same thing is happening. What is wrong with the Holly Red.

your doing something wrong or you have bad regulators. you can regulate fuel pressure to zero if you need it. maybe a bad guage but pretty much any carb car you see on the road uses a holley blue pump. and they work fine for everybody else.

What size carb are people using. I have a 650 Holly DP. most of the time when we adjust the regulater the fuel is pouring into the carb.

I NEED HELP ASAP.

Size of the carb shouldn't matter at all. You must be doing something wrong, or you're using bad regulators. You should be able to regulate it down as far as you want.

then dont connect it to the carb, put the other end in a fuel contaner and adj it until you get it right so you dont flood the motor.

Any body know where i can buy a new Fuel pressure gage 2day. I live in St Clair Shores

like i said with the holley blue and holley regs you have to set the pressure with the reg flowing so take the line out of the reg and put it in a bucket turn the pump on then sent it because we were getting 13 and the guy form bolt on speed shop in southgate came to our house and told us to do that and it worked
