223 vs 5.56 what's your take on them?

So I just jumped on the "Hillary taking our guns" bandwagon and got me an AR15...( Actually Dunhams had them on sale) and every one I talked to has a different opinion on what to shoot.
I got guys saying make sure you shoot 10k rounds of the same ammo caliber before switching to the other... other guys saying they don't know what there talking about, mix it up, and other say only use .556 cause there on sale all the time.
What's your opinion on it? (Jason?)
Dicks just had a sale on 200, 223 Fiocchi's for $69 so I loaded up on those and Palmettos website has 1000 rounds of Federal 223 for like $350
Kinda new to the AR world, what do you like shooting out of yours?
Also your opinion on steel mags vs harden plastic... (Again major difference of opinions) I got 30 round PMAGS for $11 each.
 
Mostly P mags here and some of the new Daniel defense mags.
Also have surefire 60rd, 100rd and a drum..... For fun.

I like the poly mags over steel, but have a pile of steelies too.

I shoot whatever ammo I can get my hands on cheap. 223/556 don't care.

What ar you get!?

Depends on your barrel. They say that the ammo is interchangeable but the 5.56 is a bit more powerful due to grain count (more pressure in the weapon). They make a .223 and 5.56 barrels. They also make a .223 Wylde which has the headspace for the 5.56 gas pressure

It's a 5.56 barrel.. I heard if it's stamped 223 you cannot shoot 5.56 out of it

I get steel wolf for cheap 400$ for 1500 rounds to my door.
Shoots great for just BS shooting

.223 can be more accurate, 5.56 is hotter/faster and should function better in everything regardless of gas port size.
.223 Wylde is a cross between the two.
Shouldn't shoot 5.56 in a .223 chamber, but totally safe to shoot .223 out of a 5.56 chamber.

Buy a 5.56 gun for a plinker and end of days type gun. Build a .223 gun for accuracy and reloading match quality ammo.

I have both, and enjoy them all for different reasons. Like you found from others, opinions are like a$$holes. Ya gotta weed through the BS and find the middle ground.


Wolf ammo is cheap, dirty and often weak, but works most of the time. I usually order from www.sgammo.com, and try to buy 5.56 surplus/spec ammo, either M193, or M855/SS109 for everyday plinking, but do have a supply of .223 and match grade .223 bought and handloaded ammo for my guns.

As for mags, i also have a large supply of variety, Pmags, steel and aluminum, Colt/ASC/NHMTG/Brownells. They all work fine for me, and junkers get trashed or plastered for range use only.

Eye Candy of a few toys for those that like pretty things........some bought, some built by me.

Nice write up... was just at the range woth a buddy who bought a Tevor x95.... great gun to shoot!
 
Go buy a 7.62x51 and it won't matter because the 5.56/223 stuff will sit in the cabinet.

At the distance a rifle makes sense (200+ yards) the 5.56x45 starts becoming weak sauce. 5.56 comes out of the barrel at a pretty good clip but still has half the energy. I have found that in 7.62 that my interest is pretty much only using Sierra Game King or casting my own after I consume FMJ. Don't get me wrong at all, 5.56 ARs are neat and all, but once you find your way to 7.62 you will probably lose interest (unless spray and pray is your thing).

I will say that follow-up shots on 5.56 is way easier and more enjoyable to send multiple projectiles down range regardless... but whatever you're shooting at that probably needs a follow up shot already knows SHTF so does it matter if it takes another second or so for a follow up shot with a 7.62? 7.62 gives no shits about a small tree or a car door, in my experience with 5.56 it cares a lot more. So what I'm getting at is that if you're sloppy on the first one the chance for success on the second one is probably going to be much greater whether it's a woodchuck hiding behind a tree or something more bipedal.

I really like Lake City stuff for 5.56. I'm less picky about 7.62 but I still prefer Lake City for its cost/quality ratio. I do have a lot of Fiocchi though. I do not care for the staked-in primers.
 
I will never patronize cheaperthangold ever again after they skyjacked prices after the CT shootings years ago. Instead i choose to patronize companies that stand by their fellow enthusiast and offer fair pricing no matter the political climate......DSGarms and SGAmmo are two of my favorites that stood by us all.

Haters gonna hate, but I shoot the hell out of some steel case ammo, I prefer wolf over tulla. I bought 8 steel mags from palmetto that had magpul followers and hated them everyone had issues with the bullet catching and causing a ftf, but after filing them they work decent but I love my p-mags they work great, follow slickguns.com and you can get some great deals.
