If you REALLY want to experience the Grand Prix, become a corner worker with Waterford Hills and the Detroit Region of the SCCA. A flagger is part of the race, not an usher or security. But you can't just be a flagger for one race, especially a pro race. But work Detroit and you can probably work any race in the country.

Retiree from my Fire hall Blackie Myers has worked waterford for decades. He also is in charge for all emergency services at this and every Detroit Grand Prix and still splits the same duty at every Indy 500. Its amazing how many sponsors and volunteers they gather up for the Grand Prix. They spend a bunch of time planning. One year he got Hummer to donate 30 vehicles for the event back when Hummers first came out. Some one else donates the graphics/another company will donate emergency lighting/another will donate extinguishers. The city got quite a few calls wanting to know why they purchased Hummers as responding fire vehicles. (they were all parked behind my fire house)I think for emergency services they already have the field of volunteers filled. They started taking applications months ago.

Needless to say, the people that do volunteer have a ton of fun doing it....

I know Blackie, though I haven't seen him in years. I hope he's doing well. Emergency Services is another way of being involved in the race.

He just underwent some surgery but is now doing very well..... They assign 1 firefighter with each team which puts them in the pits/up close and personal with the team. They tell me the teams are kinda suspicious at first...I guess everything they do to keep a competitive edge is to be ultra secret about everything.

I think hospitality supervisor would be fun....welcoming everyone to the city...providing assistance.
