2007 lincoln mkx carrier bearing

so I took my mkx to the shop for what I thought was a front cv shaft going bad ( making a clicking sound ) , ends up being one of the carrier bearings on the rear drive shaft . No big deal right ? , wrong . its un-serviceable and the only way to fix it is to buy a new drive shaft for 1000 dollars ( yes 1,000 dollars ) . I know the people at the shop and they sourced out a used one for 350 but with them installing it it would be a 500 dollar job and I cant see myself spending 500 on a used part that may fail me again in a few miles . so for now what they told me they will do is remove the rear shaft witch would make is FWD only for the time being.

now for my questions lol

will taking the rear driveshaft out temporarily cause any issues ? only issues I can possibly see happening are possibly a speed sensor being thrown off or maybe an ABS.

is there a way to actually replace this bearing ? I know its labeled as ( un-serviceable ) but im sure theres a way to get it done , they do list the bearings online for 80ish a piece

thanks

As far as the Ford service manual is concerned, if the carrier bearing is faulty, the driveshaft needs to be replaced. So they aren't BS'ing you. Since you have the driveshaft out of the vehicle, you can call or take it to some axle shops or see what they would do for you.

I have seen these vehicles be run without a driveshaft but it might set a DTC

they took the shaft out , is a 3 piece design with 2 carrier bearings , from what I understand is that's an outdated design and the new improved design is a 2 piece with only 1 carrier bearing . drove is a few miles home and don't have any issues yet

what I don't get is why is the carrier bearing available for purchase if its a unserviceable part ? , a 80dollar bearing fails so now a almost 1000 dollar drive shaft is needed . stupid design

It is a poor design. As we all know, someone had to manufacture the bearing that the original design uses....:dunno:

Ive swapped out a lot of "unserviceable" bearings in my day.......

Is that shaft out? Can you take some pictures and send them to me? 734 674 6479

the only picture I have isn't very good , mainly took it because I was surprised for damn long the thing was

im sure any driveshaft or even machine shop could swap out the bearing, a truck shop does our driveshaft work.
As far as pulling it out you should be fine, the wheels will be spinning the same so it would be a non issue for abs.
