2004 f150 motor,question

truck has 38000 miles on a 5.4 3 valve.after it runs a few minutes it starts soundi ng like a diesel,dont really sound like a rod nock at all,oil pressure is great according to factory gauge.any help would be appreciated

I think that they all have that diesel sound. It's probably something to do with the vct.

not sure its a friends truck,any thing special he should use in it

needs 5w20.
does the noise go away just above idle?
with the wrong oil the phasers will rattle/ knock at idle and can cause a mil light
