My dads truck is burning oil on start up. it's an 04 f150 5.4L with 64,xxx miles, he changes the oil every 3000 miles with motorcraft synthetic blend 5w20. I cant figure out why it would be doing this he doesn't drive it very hard and he has never missed an oil change. if it sets for more than a half hour you get a nice puff of blue smoke on start up then it's fine no smoke at all. any ideas/suggestions has anybody heard of this happening?

Yeah thats normal on a 5.4.. those are junk engines especially if they're not maintained. One of my repo's at the lot has a 5.4 in it with 89k miles on it. The truck is on its third engine according to the previous owner. :shake:

damn that sucks his warranty just ran out

^Yep, I haven't heard of this before, good engines from my experience. If the PCV is working, I'd say it's the thin synthetic oil, tell him to start using some conventional 10w30 or 10w40 and see how it goes.

It's not normal dude. Check the PCV valve, sounds like he's getting oil through the PCV and it's pooling up in the intake.
this is what I told him to check originally but he said they look fine, I'm gonna tell him to step up to 5w30 I don't like the 5w20 in my car maybe it will help it. I'm going over there this weekend to take a good look at it.
Thanks guys +1's

there is a bulletin about ONLY using 5w20.
thicker oil can cause a tick /knock

idk thinner oil doesnt stay on the cylinder walls at high RPM so I use 5w30 in mine the added lubrication from the synthetic royal purple makes up for the higher numerical gap I think..... Idk
It seems to me like it would have to be leaking from the valvetrain into one of the cylinders, otherwise I would think it would smoke all the time

go to the front of the truck. Look at the center of the grill. Theres should be a blue oval with some bullshit written in it. Take one step back, and the with your right hand form a , and extend your hand to the grill for about 15 seconds.

You need to: Check the air in the passenger front tire, turn the right turn signal on, push in the cigarette lighter, then run around the truck counterclockwise 3 times, stop and fart in the gas tank. if this doesnt work i guess your SOL.
