2002 mustang gt auto trans failure

About 6 months ago I picked up a 2002 GT with 190,000 miles. Only miner issues untill about 2 months ago I started hearing a vibration when the auto trans would shift between overdrive at lower speeds. Then two days ago something snapped when leaving a light under normal acceleration. I had enough momentum to quickly turn into a gm dealership. The car idols fine and rev's rpm no issues and will shift through all gears without making any unusual noise but their is no forward or reverse coupling when placed in gear. I did a visual inspection, nothing out of the ordinary. Being I was in a service center parking lot I decided to have a inspection done their rather than pay extra towing fees. They stated it was internal to the transmission and quoted me around $2800 for the repair. Has anyone run into this issue before? Does this sound like a common issue? And would a full removal an replacement of the transmission necessary?

P.S. If anyone is interested in the job I have a 85 mustang gt project I could trade for parts an labor. Here's a link to the 85 project for trade. http://motownmuscle.com/forums/showthread.php?126577-85-GT-Stang-work-in-progress&highlight=

Most likey the trans will have to come out. Unless you are keeping the car, I wouldn't rebuild it, just look for another replacement unit and swap it in. Probably save a decent amount of money. I sold the 4R70W out of my 98 stang for $350 a year or two ago....

Its unusual to loose both Fwd & Rev at the same time (different clutch backs/bands applied). So if you have no fwd or rev your transmission is either not pumping oil (broke pump-highly abnormal for your unit) plugged filter (Plugged filters usually give some movement for short period of time after the engine has been off) or input shaft not connected to the torque converter (Broken-rarely breaks or stripped splines in the converter)
As mentioned, installing a used transmission is going to be the least expensive route... you will pay 150-400 for the trans itself depending where you buy it from.

I still owe $ on the car so I will be keeping her. Currently looking for a replacemen trans like your recommendation.

I thaught losing forward and reverse was odd. Im hoping it the imput shaft or converter. Last trans I had installed in my previous 01 gt ran about $3000 for the finished job. Damn near the value of the car.
