1999 sebring issues...

So my girlfriend has had this car for a while (second owner) it only has 74k miles on it and its a piece of Chrysler shit! I changed the oil every 2k miles since she dont drive it a whole lot, yet i check the oil at 1,500 miles and its over 2 qrts low! doesnt seem to leak oil, just burn it like its gas. Also the trans lines use a cheap ass clamp style where they go into the radiator for cooling, and it leaks a couple quarts of trans fluid every oil change. I am not sure if thats how it came from the factory or if the previous owner had some hack job on it. The motor ticks like hell on every startup (even after fresh oil change) and it will tick for at least 4-5 minutes before it goes away. It also gets horrible gas mileage (around 12-15 AVERAGE!)

So i am trying to figure out how the hell i can get this thing back in a good shape since her family wont help her get a new car like they should. Any ideas as to what i should do? run heavier weighted oil? pull the trans cooling lines and try to reseal them better? also i want to do a tune up on the car but its got the v6 split port injection and the one bank of spark plugs is under neath the actually upper intake manifold, so i have to pull the upper intake just to change plugs?

I will try to get some pics to describe the problems.

ANY and all help/advice is greatly appreciated!

thanks
ryan

upper intake has to come off the do the rear 3 plugs

make sure the wires, cap and rotor are all changed as well

replace the rubber hose for the trans lines

the biggest problem with Chrysler trans lines is the hose seaping, but replace the clamps at the same time

it seems both the upper and lower trans lines leak, about how much do you think those would cost? i might just try to take the lines off, clean them up and maybe trim the rubber back some, get some new clamps and see if that may fix it, before buying new lines.

thanks for the info! +1 to you

you could take a hole saw and make holes where the spark plugs are thro the intake, then you'll be able to remove the plugs, then just use duck tape to seal up the holes.

j/k bro. Looks like it's gonna be a PITA

lol yeah its going to be, the car needs so much work it aint funny. i wish i had enough credit to help her get a new car because i feel like puttin all this work and money into this car is such a waste.

WHy i havent done shit to my sable. 2200 to do a trans, Cars not even worth 2200. So i baby it. I'm just gonna drive it until it dies.

Atleast mine has the change oil feature as an added bonus!!

When the oil light comes on I know I'm 4 quarts low on oil. I just slap on another filter. toss in the oil and i'm good to go for a couple months

lol thats about how this car is getting!

yeap you have to remove the intake manifold to do the tune up. The trans lines I see you got we like to use fuel injectors clamps on them if we have a big enough size in parts so it clamps 100percent around the hose and wont leak again. Not sure about your oil problem I can ask the heavy duty guys at my work on thursday about any common problems on those.

Thanks for the info, where can i get the fuel injector clamps? and if you could find out what i should do for the oil consumption, i had to add a quart and a half at 1700 miles. it doesnt leak oil, it burns it right out the tail pipe, when you start it and rev it it smokes like an old clunker, I'm pretty sure its a common problem for these chrysler engines. Im guessing maybe i should use a much heavier weighted oil on the next change?

thanks!

i would try to tighten the clamps, then take brake parts cleaner and clean off the entire area where its leaking. start the engine and observe.
hard to tell from the pics, may be leaking from the radiator, and not the lines.

Pull the fittings and put some teflon tape on them. Trim the hose about 3/4 of an inch and replace the clamps. Its a really common problem for the fittings to weep and or the hose to leak fluid on those vehicles.

As to your oil burning issues. Sounds to me like you have some serious sludge buildup. If you know a GM technician tell him you want to do a GM top end cleaning on the cylinders.

As for your ticking lifter try running a bottle of CD2 oil detergent "avialable at walmart" every 1000 miles. Just add it to the oil. It will break down the sludge graudlally and the lifters will STFU.

The fuel consumption issue is most likely a fialed or worn out oxygen sensor. Try replacing them. Also do a backpressure test on the catalytic converter. They can and will clog and the gas mileage will be for shit.

If you need anything else to investigate drop me a line.

thanks i will give all that a try. I dont know any GM techs, just a few ford techs. Are you talking about somthing similar to a BG product induction system cleaner?

thanks!

looking at the photos, it looks like the brass nuts are holding the tank in the radiator...I'm not certain, but I believe the fittings sticking out of the radiator are part of the transmission cooling tank, and are not removable.

i power washed the area, it seems like its weaping from the hose/clamp, im going to pull the hoses and trimt hem back and put some better clamps on it and see what happens.
