Looking to sell or trade my 1996 Ford Explorer. It has a 4.0L with 161,xxx automatic 4x4. Here is a list of everything that I know about the vehicle. It has been a great truck for me now I am looking for something different.

The Good: Put newer brakes on it late last year, New Wheel bearing on the passenger side, Always starts right up 4x4 works Great with no problem, Transmission shifts great, Has over head display, Just got the wheels and tires balanced ( they said that it will need tires some time soon), Has 6 disc CD changer that works great, All the lights work great, Just installed a brand new hitch on it a couple months ago leather interior, Both front seats are power and work great, New windshield wiper's end of last year, Heat works great, Has cruise control, I am sure there is more just can't think of it right now.

The not so good: Engine does have lifter tick ( does not affect any performance just ticks I have been driving it like this for a while with no problems), Does have power windows that work but they only work from the drives door, Gas gauge doesn't work I believe it needs a new sending unit not 100% sure tho, Like I mentioned before will need tires some time soon I think they would be fine until the winter or maybe even through the winter, The key doesn't work in the drivers door but does in the passenger side door and ignition, Has some rust on the rockers but is hard to see because of the running boards, The floors and under neath is pretty much rust free. That is all that I know is wrong with it that I know of. It has been a great truck. I have been driving the truck as is for over a year with no issues.

Got it on craigslist for 2299 but I will do 2000 or best for mm or trade for another 4x4 SUV, 4x4 extended cab truck, or Saturn SC1 or SC2 5 speed. Any questions feel free to ask.

Thank you
Sam

Just FYI, that tick is probably just the rocker arm/shafts. It's a pretty easy repair, I remember doing it years ago on my brother's Ranger. The 4.0 has shaft mounted rockers and you change the whole side at one time. Definitely easier to fix than a lifter tick.

Really I had a 95 Ranger 4.0 with the same tick it was the lifters. But I will defiantly Take a look at the Rocker arm's and shaft's. It would be a lot easier lol What happens to the shafts that would make them tick like that I have never heard of that making a tick just the lifters? Thanks for the info

I can't remember exactly what caused the noise, but I do remember that when we researched it, it was a very common issue and many parts places had the stuff in stock. The whole side (all the rockers are on one shaft) comes off at the same time. It was an easy fix.

Yeah I know that it is all one piece. I just never knew that could cause that type of noise. I guess I will have to research this a little more.
