Looking at a higher mileage 175K range Z71 Colorado, 3.5L inline 5. for my nephew, things to look for? Everything else on the market is a "shitbox" rust bucket.

Suggestions?

Looking to be $4-5K range. SUV, Pickup for teenager. 4x4 preferred.

The biggest problem I've come across with the 3.5 is the vvt cam phaser getting stuck in the advance position. This usually happens when the vvt oil control solenoid screens get clogged, come apart, or the valve fails. If it doesn't get replaced right away the phaser can get "locked" into a position that makes it run bad, then it's time for expensive work. Generally, if the oil is kept clean and topped off the problem is less likely to happen. Other then that, thermostats are a common failure (stuck open) and I've dealt with a few Colorado's with wiring issues near the fuse block under the hood causing ignition problems (wires breaking inside the harness, almost always a wire going to an ignition coil for some reason).

Not really sure what to look for on the rest of the truck besides the usual stuff.

Those three point fives were updated to it into a 3.7 after all the 3.5 had a cylinder head problem all the valves and valve seats were bad. find a Carfax with any dealer service on it maybe? It may have a reman head on it from the dealer

Thanks Autoroc, sounds like a family member owned it and passed to another family member, have to see what they have for records and do a carfax too.

VIN: 1GCDT196X68119027 2006 Chevy Colorado, if anyone can provide a service history. Say's motor hasn't been "cracked into" Just spark plugs, and recent water pump.
