03 mustang gt burnout

so i got bored a few min ago so i took the mustang on down to my fav parking lot in mexico to do some dohnuts, well i blew the air intake apart at the mass air meter, so i tripped the check engine with a diag of low air incoming,
but the car stalled a few times before i reconnected it.
if the mass air meter is tripped does it kill the ignition!?!?

What does "tripping the mass air meter" mean?? How can a MAF meter be "tripped"??
